Write What You Know... Or, in the case of fiction, write about the things that interest you. The most successful self-published authors write their work to be something they themselves would enjoy reading. What most people don't think about, but self-published authors understand, is that if there's one person interested in a given subject or topic, there are usually several more, and those interests can translate into a nice second income. In the more popular areas of subject matter, there are hundreds of authors with multiple hundreds of titles, many offering very similar information, but with different phrasing, tone, or prioritization, such that two titles with the same information may each find sufficient market share. Title A may reach many people, yet leave many others uninterested, while Title B will reach many that Title A did not, yet those who read Title A may not find Title B interesting at all. Write what you know, write what you love, write it in such a way that you enjoy reading it and the writing portion of your self-publishing quest may be considered done and done well. |
