Self-Publishing: Style Before Content?

There exist many ways to express ideas, thoughts, facts
and concepts in a self-published work. Lately we've been more
and more reminded that the method of expression matters as
much as, if not more than, the content being expressed!  Even to the
point that, depending on the audience, where one method will
assist with 98%+ comprehension and retention, another method
will carve that number in half or worse. What changes?
Style, mannerisms, tone, pace or flow, all of these are
factors in presentation that can affect whether or not one's
audience engages with it, internalizes and takes ownership,
or... not. There are some self-published authors who are
truly genius at creating such a warm, welcoming environment,
so much so that if all of the stylistic elements of their work
were to be stripped away, the actual content would be
extremely concise indeed! Of course, each author must find
their own balance between style and content, yet we feel it
behooves us to provide a gentle reminder that what may seem
balanced to us as authors may not be what our target audience
will enjoy – While style might not come before content, an
argument can be made that one's writing style is at least as
important as the content being written.
